On 7th of October SSCC were involved in the very successful ESB 90th anniversary tour of Lough Ree. Roughly 180 ESB employees from all over Ireland came to Athlone to do the tour and where accompanied on their cycle by SSCC members.
It all began back in Spring when the ESB contacted Jim Maguire, enquiring as to whether SSCC could help organise and run this event which they had planned to celebrate their 90th anniversary. Several planning meetings took place over the Summer involving Jim Maguire, Steve Digby, Padraig Cooke and ESB representatives. Plans for a course were drawn up and the logistics of running the event were worked out. The attention to detail shown by the ESB was incredible with safety being paramount at all times. The club put out the call for help with the event and 22 members came forward to help on the day.
The event started at the Bounty with a safety briefing and a nice tribute was paid to former SSCC member Pat Coyle who of course worked for the ESB. This was followed by a photoshoot of all riders, both in the stand and on the pitch. Drone photography was used as well as normal photography during the tour.
About 180 ESB employees had entered and they were divided into seven groups depending on their ability. Speeds varied from 28 to 30, 28 to24 and 24 to 22 kilometres per hour. The groups went off at five minute intervals- three SSCC riders went with each group leading the way, setting the pace and keeping the bunches together.
The route went up to Ballymahon and then to Lanesboro where refreshments were supplied in the ESB power station. From there it was north to just below Roscommon, across to Motepark, up Skryne Hill and home via Curraghboy and Kiltoom.
A lovely meal was supplied in the Bounty at the end by the ESB. A great day was had by all and everyone got back safely I think! ( an ESB guy was still counting them all back in when I went home!). The ESB were full of praise for all our help with the event and we must thank them for their professionalism and the very generous contribution they made to our club for their help.
There is unlikely to be another such event- well maybe not till their 100th anniversary in 10 years time!!
